Feedback from Jennifer

My time at Animal Welfare was incredible and difficult to put into words. It’s amazing to think that something that started as an intro message could end up having such a profound impact on me. I’ll be forever grateful for this experience.

Nestled in the jungle, the location is stunning. One thing that makes this place special is that it is a long-term residence for many of the dogs. Unlike a traditional shelter, with dogs coming and going, AWKC provides a safe and loving home for many dogs that are too injured or old to survive on their own. This gives a unique energy to the location as a safe place to rest, relax, and simply enjoy.

The local staff are also incredible. I have never met anyone who works harder and loves more. The tireless efforts of the local women who manage the on-the-ground-efforts is nothing short of inspiring. From the moment you arrive they welcome you into the family.

As amazing as the opportunity was I will be honest that it can be very hard work. This is more than playing with cute puppies, it is giving unconditional love to dogs with lots of physical and emotional trauma. I cleaned up more poop than I ever imagined possible, dressed some of the worst wounds I have ever seen, but I also got to cuddle and spend time with the sweetest little creatures that are so loving and happy to see you. In order to thrive here you need to have a strong stomach and work ethic, but also, and almost more importantly, have an open heart. Whatever work you put in you’ll receive back ten-fold with the right attitude.

It’s been a few weeks since I left and I’m still showing pictures of the pups to everyone, like a proud parent showing off their kids. My time there was so special that I hope I can return in the future and spend more time with the wonderful dogs in the beautiful location they call home.

Thank you to Mo, Nancy, and Tanja for everything!❤️
